Aloha Friday: Halloween Costumes

Category : Featured Reviews, clothes shoes & accessories, memes & carnivals

It’s time for Aloha Friday, the day that you take it easy and look forward to the weekend, in Hawaii and blog land anyway. Over at An Island Life, Kailani decided that on Fridays she would take it easy on posting and ask a simple question for you to answer. Nothing that requires a lengthy response.

If you’d like to participate, just post your own question on your blog and leave your link at An Island Life’s blog. Don’t forget to visit the other participants! It’s a great way to make new bloggy friends!

I know it’s only August and for most of us, summer is still in full force, but my mind has been living in the fall these days. I’m already anticipating the leaves changing colors, drinking hot apple cider, pumpkin picking with my kids, baking pies for Thanksgiving and trick or treating this Halloween. I’ve actually already gotten costumes for both kids for Halloween this year and it got me to thinking about how we get those costumes. My Aloha Friday questions for you this week are…

  • Do you make your own costumes or buy? If you buy them, where do you typically go?
  • How much is too much for a Halloween costume? What do you typically spend?
  • What does your family do on Halloween? Trick or treating in the neighborhood or a local event?
  • Do you have any family traditions for this holiday? Will you dress up or just the kids?

Feel free to answer some or all of the questions above in the comments section below and check back soon for a review of my three year old’s Halloween costume this year – it has got to be one of the coolest costumes I’ve ever seen and I’m eager looking forward to bragging about it and the wonderful company it came from soon!

We usually buy. For the first 5 years of Johnny’s life I bought from the Disney store. Then, he wanted more grown up things. Which was fine. I would spend between 40 and 60 bucks for a costume. Since Paige is really into it this year, one of my friends is making her costume. She’s going to be Minnie Mouse. I’m almost afraid of the price tag, but I know it will be well worth it. Her work is just stunning!

We always go to the Grands, Uncles and Aunties and friends. There isn’t much happening in our neighborhood because we have all old peeps around. LOL Think Golden Girls!

This year, I’ll dress up with the kids. Halloween is on Saturday, and I have to work all day. I’ll be Farmer in the Dell. :) I LOVE Halloween!

We buy our costumes. I usually shop around looking for ideas. I love the little kid costumes at Old Navy. They look homemade and are not expensive. I think much more than $20 is way too much and we try to stay within that amount. We do not do too much on Halloween. We take the kids to see my parents and then head around the neighborhood and then back to man the house. No family traditions since we tend to do more for Purim in the Spring.

Well- I was going to use handme downs from my cousin this year- but alas- none will fit then because they just fit now. So… I’ll be craigslisting and consignment shopping for an Eeyore or a Tigger costume.

I always try Walmart and places like that first because they’re cheaper. We usually spend around $20 or so for the kids. We hand out candy for the first 1/2 hour to an hour in our neighborhood, then go Trick-or-treating. After our neighborhood is over, it starts in the bf’s mom’s neighborhood. We go there for chili and homemade treats, then trick-or-treat there for about an hour.

I love Halloween… however for us it’s Samhain.

My best friend and I are making new traditions.

We have “The Great Pumpkin” that we are starting this year with the kids. (I love the idea)

The Barr family of Dayton, Ohio, traditionally offers up excess treats to the Great Pumpkin. After trick-or-treating, Clay, Gracie, and Caden (ages 10, 8, and 6) come home with about 10 pounds of candy, says their mother, Mary. That night they eat their fill and then pack a small sandwich bag with their favorite sweets. The rest of the candy goes into a container in front of the fireplace. While the kids sleep, the Great Pumpkin takes the loot to a local food bank and leaves a small toy for each child. One year, appropriately, the Great Pumpkin left electric toothbrushes.

We are going to do a communal flame between the households, it’s the beginning of our new year and the welcoming of the dead back into our lives for one night, so we let the them “see” the kids and it’s cathartic for us.

We are doing a kids party this year… games, etc.
Usually I do a HUGE party with adults, etc, but last year the police were called so we are going to be mellow this year. :)

Costumes: I won’t spend more than 50$. But my baby daughters have worn tutus for the past two years… this one won’t be any different :)

Oh.. and don’t feel bad for thinking about the fall.
My best friend and I just worked through our “family” holiday schedule so we know what is going on and when we can plan the “friends” holidays!

    Nancy says:

I made one costume and will never do it again. I buy, usually from eBay, that way they’re cheaper and I usually make my money back selling them later on. I try not to spend more than $20 or so per costume. The good thing is my younger can wear the older’s hand-me-downs until he has an opinion, which won’t be for a few more years (I hope!)

Not sure what we’ll do this year as we just moved across the country. Previous years we’ve always gone to our friends’ neighborhood where the houses are closer together than our old neighborhood. My company supposedly does a big haunted house and trick or treating, and we’ll probably go around the neighborhood as well.

    And no, I don’t dress up. :)

The whole family loves to dress up for Halloween for trick or treating time. No parties or vacations. Sometimes we make our own costumes and sometimes we buy them online or at a local retail. Either way it’s always fun!

Long time ago I opted for costumes made at home and that how my son won the first prize of a Carnival contest. This encouraged me to keep on making our own costumes. That also makes the costumes unique and originals. Also, we don’t trick or treat any more (not really successful in my country) but I organize a Halloween party and gather as many friends and close relatives as possible and we have fun before the Day of the Deads that we still observe on November 1st.

    * Do you make your own costumes or buy? If you buy them, where do you typically go?
I have done both. When we do buy we get them wherever we find one that catches out fancy – Target, Wal-mart, Disney Store, etc.

    * How much is too much for a Halloween costume? What do you typically spend?
We typically spend around $15 for a costume. I would never spend more than $20-$25.

    * What does your family do on Halloween? Trick or treating in the neighborhood or a local event?
We trick or treat in out neighborhood & the teenagers stay home & pass out candy.

    * Do you have any family traditions for this holiday? Will you dress up or just the kids?
Sometimes we dress up with the kids & sometimes we don’t. The best year was the time we all dressed up as a family of ghosts. I can’t talk the teenagers into joining us on that endeavor anymore.

We buy them or occasionally make them from things left around the house. One year I was a zombie so I got an old dress shirt of my dad’s & my mom ran over some mud/oil (w/ the car) & then ran over my shirt. After that it was a matter of painting my face. We did something similar for my son last year.

I won’t spend more than $25 & it is usually something that can be worn two years.

We do what’s called trunk or treating @ our church house. Everyone pulls in & opens the back of the vehicles which we decorate & then the kids go round & round getting tons of candy. It’s nice & relaxing. Love it.

I can’t even tell you the last time I dressed up. I’ll bet it was in college! If I dressed up now, it would be as a witch. I always like doing that outfit.

We always purchase them – I know my mom used to always have ours made by aunt. I miss that kind of costume…

It’s so funny seeing your post cause my daughter has been bugging the bejeebers out of be trying to figure out what she wants to be for Halloween. Myself, I don’t like this holiday! I dislike all the negative things associated with it. So I decorate for fall but NOT for Halloween. I have let my kids trick or treat however. Not for the candy but for the good times they have with their friends and dressing up. As far as costumes? We go to Goodwill or Salvation Army. Each has a wide selection of costumes or dressy clothes that can be easily made into a princess, etc. Stop by! http://psychicmamaindigochild.blogspot.com/2009/08/would-you-rather-have-little-boy-still.html
