Review: Arnold’s Dutch Country 100% Whole Wheat Bread

I grew up in a white bread family. My husband was raised on whole wheat – the wheatier the better! When we married there was a brief span of time in which we couldn’t agree on what bread to buy. He insisted the wheat bread tasted better and held up better to things like spreading peanut butter or eating an open face sandwich – not to mention the healthy benefits of whole wheat and whole grains. I, however, just couldn’t stand the taste of all that healthiness. I much preferred white.

But after awhile we started eating healthier in general and I came across Split Top Wheat bread which has the soft consistency of white bread with some of the health benefits of a whole wheat bread, though admittedly a whole wheat bread would have been healthier, we agreed to compromise and after awhile I grew to prefer the taste and no longer like white sandwich bread at all. Still, it occasionally bugged me a little bit that I could be eating a healthier bread.

So when Arnold’s Breads offered us a bag of Arnold’s Dutch Country 100% Whole Wheat Bread to review, I jumped on the opportunity. I was immediately impressed with the flavor and soft texture – this bread had twice as much fiber and protein as the split top store brand wheat bread we’d been getting, contains 19 grams of whole grains and tasted good! My three year old liked it, too – he even ate the crust!

The next step was clearly to have my husband try it. He liked it a lot better than the bread we’ve been getting and loved how well it held up to an open faced sandwich – much better than our Split Top breads which really aren’t much sturdier than white bread. It’s also a good source of Calcium, Vitamin A, D and E and contains no High Fructose Corn Syrup!

My next question was, “Sure it tastes good, but how much does it cost?” We go through a lot of bread in our family so cost is important – the bread we’ve been buying is a store brand that costs only a dollar when it isn’t on sale. I checked out Arnold’s in our bread aisle and found it cost only $1.79 – not an awful lot more for a bread that is a lot better for us and the whole family likes. Kid friendly, mother approved and husband gave an okay on the cost difference while happily eating a much coveted open faced sandwich.

Thanks Arnold’s Breads – you’ve converted this family! You can learn more about the bread here, which is available nationwide (which is branded as “Arnold” east of the Mississippi and “Oroweat” west of the Mississippi River).

  1. We eat whole-grain white bread..whatever kind is on sale. However, I had never heard of Arnold’s. I went to their site and they have many delicious sounding breads (from Whole Grain White to various flatbreads, fruit breads, Brick Oven Premium breads, and too many more to mention). We have a Bunny Bread factory in our city, but Arnolds seems to have a much better variety of quality breads.

  2. Keep in mind that 90% of the “whole wheat” bread you find in supermarkets is doctored up. When they take out a bad ingredient, they usually replace it with another bad one. For instance, when Arnolds takes out High Fructose Corn Syrup, they replace it with Splenda (Sucralose), which is the latest brain tumor causing sweetener. Yes, it is bad, just like Aspartame. If thats not bad enough, check the packages for Guar Gum which is banned in some countries, and groups are pressing the FDA to do the same. Its in many breads, ice cream, and others. Not to mention the preservatives which is commonly used in plastics.

My advice is to write down ingredients. Go home. Research each one on the internet to find out more. You will be startled at what you learn. American food companies are relentless and care only about profit, NOT HEALTH. Its a gimmick to get you to buy. So while you THINK youre eating healthy, you are not.

NO PROCESSED FOOD. NO FLOUR. NO SUGAR. < Its the only good diet.

PLUS. Saturated Fat is GOOD. Cholesterol is GOOD. Both are necessary and 40G of Saturated is much better than 3G of TRANS FAT anyday. Years ago lobbyists pushed transfats on us and gave saturated fat and cholesterol a bad name. But they are completely healthy.

Also, the only good oils out there include OLIVE, GRAPESEED, and PALM KERNEL. All others are either poisoned at the factory or already contain posion. Canola oil contains a poison already so stay away.

Its amazing how much disinformation is going around in this world. And people are falling for it like children.
