Today, July 13th 2010 the Shine On Now program is now open to allow girls nationwide to help American Girl give $1 to four major organizations. They will help out great organizations such as: Kids in Distressed Situations, Saved the Children, National Association of the Children’s Hospitals, and the National Wildlife Federation. By visiting Shine On Now you can contribute a ’star’ for absolutely free. Each star collected (up to 1 million) will be used to help provide clothes, books, dolls and money to the above mentioned organizations. Up to 100 stars can be donated per girl per day! In addition to contributing this free star not only are you helping out your community but you are also being entered to win a new My American Girl doll.

My family volunteers in the community often, currently I’m helping my dad raise money to rebuild a baseball stadium in town that burnt in 1987. We’ve walked door to door in town hanging bags with information in them, and various other fundraising things.

My little girl is 4 but has a giving heart!!! She went through all of her dolls clothes without being told and gave to friends so they can have clothes for their dolls. She is always thinking of others and their feelings. She also helps her Sunday School teachers set up for Sunday school and helps the extended service teachers clean up. She also helps the others kids in class!!!
I am hoping when she is older to get her more involved in the church

We are active in our community helping on clean up and beautification projects with the kids.
We have helped the March of Dimes for years to raise money to save babies. We also contribute to the food pantry on a regular basis and have done a major project for a homeless shelter.

My little girl is 5 years old, and while she is too young to start a movement of her own she LOVES to be involved!
I am a big couponer, so we always have lots of “extras” laying around. She is very sensitive to families who have financial struggles, and she helps me gather up items to donate to our local food pantry. She always grabs the toilet paper and toothpaste first because she knows those are items people with food stamps have a hard time obtaining.
I hope that as she gets older we will be able to get more involved in the outreach of our local food pantry.

We donate clothing and household goods to Purple Heart and other organizations. We also have done volunteer work in our local community.
I donated a star in my daughter’s name today 7/14.
My son and I serve dinner at the Homeless Shelter on Thanksgiving. I thought it would be good for me because I deal w/the homeless a lot with my job at the public library. However, the homeless I see at work, aren’t the people that were at the shelter.
It’s always an amazing experience. Each year I learn something new and it renews my spirit. I see the transformation in my son as well. Our experience serving has made him grateful for all he has – the new clothes, toys, tools and shoes. It’s really made him thankful, yet at the same time, he comes away wanting to give more and more. Not only material items, but his time too.
I can’t wait until Paige is of the age where she can help.

my daughter: I am the head of the recycling committee at my children’s school and my daughter(she is 6) is my “assistant”. She helps me each week sorting through all the HUGE garbage bags FULL of cookie wrappers, candy wrapper, chip wrapper, juice pouches, cracker wrappers, & plastic food tubs. Putting them into their appropriate boxes and then we take the boxes to UPS and she will help me carry in all the boxes to ship to Terracycle for recycling efforts to help our planet AND benefit our school! Where ever we are, she knows now what wrapper products can be recycled and will tell an absolute stranger what to do with them!

Our family helps to sponsor, promote, establish and financially support programs and activities that help the families of children with autism. This is a group within everyone’s community that is, unfortunately, growing larger every day. One in 96 boys born this year will be diagnosed with autism. That is more cases of autism than diabetes, peanut allergies, or cancer! This doll would be a gift to my 8 yr old daughter who volunteers to teach and model social skills to children with autism, because her big brother has autism. She is incredibly patient and understanding, and finds ways to reach the kids through songs, games, and just sitting quietly beside them. She volunteers with autism sibling support groups and shares her feelings about having a brother with autism who cannnot communicate nor care for himself. She is an amazing open, loving and giving child who would probably choose to share or donate this doll if she won! Thank you for an opportunity to honor and recognize her contributions to making the world a better place for children with disabilities.

Our family helps in the community by donating to our church, which then distributes to needy families in our area. We also have made cloth dolls to send to an orphanage in Africa and made hygiene kits to send to Haiti. I spend a lot of time at the grade school helping in my daughters classes, hoping that them seeing me donate my time will encourage them to donate theirs.
