Today I want to tell you about Rockabye Baby! a collection of CDs featuring lullaby renditions of all your favorite rock bands. From The Beatles to AC/DC to No Doubt – they are sure to have a band that will appeal to you. Baby Blueberry and I received a copy of their Black Sabbath CD to review.

Rockabye Baby! lullaby renditions of black sabbath

My husband got really excited when this CD showed up in the mail – he is a fan of all the great classic rock bands, Black Sabbath included. We popped the disc into my computer and within seconds the tune of Iron Man began to fill the air – but not quite the Black Sabbath you might expect. Being a lullaby CD for baby, there were no loud guitar riffs or drums – but rather a soft, instrumental rendition instead with mellotrons, vibraphones, bells – and even a few farm animal sounds! Still – it was distinctly Iron Man and we found ourselves nodding our heads along to the music instantly. Want to hear for yourself? You can get a sneak peek of Iron Man from the cd here.

I actually found the music really pleasant to listen to. Being classic Black Sabbath tunes, the songs are catchy and I found I knew a lot of them – but being quiet and soothing lullaby music, I also found it to be really good background music while I worked on my computer. I think if it had been a real Black Sabbath cd I’d have gotten distracted – scratch that, I know I would have! And even better, the baby seems to like the music a lot, too! It actually managed to stop a minor temper tantrum in it’s tracks as she was curious to listen to the music instead. I’d definitely recommend Rockabye Baby to anyone looking for some great kids music that’s also great music - i.e. it won’t make your ears bleed like some of the kids’ music out there! Teach baby to love the same classic rock songs that you do but at a volume that will promote peaceful slumber – another plus for all of us weary parents!

You can buy Rockabye Baby cds and apparel (check out their adorable onesies!) at their website www.rockabyebabymusic.com. Also be sure to check out this Rockabye Baby! Black Sabbath coloring page!

Review: Norah Jones ‘The Fall’

Category : Featured Reviews, music

The Fall by Norah Jones

I’ve always been a fan of Norah Jones, her music is so soothing. Listening to her newest album, The Fall, I can almost feel my heart rate lowering, my breathing become slower, my mood lifts. The perfect cure for the chaos of life with a preschooler and teething infant – I’ve taken to listening to it in the car during our trips to the store and on my computer when baby is napping or even better while playing brain games on Lumosity.com – I swear my performance improves when I listen while playing!

You can click here to watch a video of Chasing Pirates (probably my favorite song on the album) on Hulu – I bet you’ll be hooked, too.

Norah Jones, in my opinion, has a timeless style – her music always makes me feel good. If you’re looking for some great music to relax to, I recommend her newest album, which you can buy on the Blue Notes Records website or in your local stores.

Great Holiday Music: Halloween Carols by Kristen Lawrence

Category : Featured Reviews, Holidays, music

What happens when a little girl, enchanted by Halloween, grows up to become a classically trained organist?

This was the first sentence that I read on the booklet accompanying Kristen Lawrence’s Halloween Carols CD: A Broom With a View. I think that sentence sums up this CD perfectly. I recieved this CD as part of a review opportunity with the Family Review Network. When it arrived at my house, the CD was wrapped up in a small black sheer bag tied at the top with a ribbon, setting just the right mood for my discovery of Kristen Lawrence’s music. A Broom With A View is a compilation of 13 songs meant to celebrate Halloween and the fall season. To date, Kristen has written over 60 carols and she is releasing them in batches of 13.

So what does happen when a little girl, enchanted by Halloween, grows up to become a classically trained organist?

A Broom With A View on YouTube

In my humble opinion, the result is brilliant. I found A Broom With a View hauntingly beautiful, reminiscent of the music from Phantom of the Opera (because of the organ music no doubt) and Danny Elfman (whom Kristen mentions as an inspiration to her) in it’s spooky style. If you like Danny Elfman, Andrew Lloyd Webber or the Halloween season, you will likely adore these carols.

Kristen created these songs in an effort to add more quality music to our Halloween collections. Enough with the cheesy sound effects and children’s music – what about something beautiful and celebratory of the season? At Christmas we have beautiful carols to accompany our silly renditions of Rudolph and Frosty the Snowman. Kristen felt Halloween deserved the same variety. Really is there ever a bad time to play good music?

I think she’s really onto something and I’ve enjoyed playing this music around the apartment. I like that it’s not too scary to play around my three year old and infant, but still has that perfect spooky vibe to accompany the dreary weather of cold, autumn nights.

I’m giving away a copy of Kristen Lawrence’s Halloween Carols at my personal blog, mommablogsalot.com. Be sure to head over there quick for a chance to win, as the giveaway ends Monday afternoon.
