Smart Youtube Plugin on wordpress.org

Category : Featured Reviews, Momma's Say, Website

Wordpress.org’s main video insert option is rather lame in that it just gives you a link to click on, rather than embedding the video directly in the post. I knew there had to be something better out there. After a quick search through the available plugins I found Smart YouTube which “allows you to easily insert Youtube videos/playlists into your post, comments and in your RSS feed. The plugin is designed to be small and fast and not use any external resources.” Sounds good to me, but does it work?

After fiddling around, trying to figure out how it works and thinking it didn’t work and almost walking away, SUCCESS! I suddenly figured it out. Here’s how it works:

  • Look under your dashboard’s “settings” options & you will find settings for Smart YouTube (assuming you’ve installed and activated the plugin)
  • At the top of the page will be a link for instructions, click that! You can also make any customizations you’d like here.
  • It will tell you pretty simply to just type httpv://[youtube address]. It should be that simple unless, like me, you’re a bit dense.
  • Do not try to turn it into a hyperlink, just type httpv (the v is for video and it’s important) :// [video address] in your visual editor. Trust me.
  • The youtube address you use should be the “shareable” link like “http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=meT2eqgDjiM” and not one of those weird long links you sometimes see like “http://www.youtube.com/user/PomplamooseMusic#p/c/F125407272F3C1A4/1/2vEStDd6HVY” Make sure you use the short ones that you’ll find under the “share” options or it won’t work and you’ll think it’s Smart YouTube’s fault except it’s really yours.
  • If you get it all right, when you hit publish the video will be embedded, perfectly like this:

So in short -- remember the v and make sure you are using the right youtube link. Happy video embedding!

MyHeritage Baby Lookalike Meter: Who Do Your Kids Look Like?

Category : Featured Reviews, Momma's Say, Website

My husband and I have many similar features which can make it difficult when trying to determine who our kids most look like. Sometimes I think my son looks more like me, other times I think he looks just like his father. I think that’s normal.

So when I saw an email this morning from MyHeritage promoting their new Baby Lookalike Meter I was very intrigued to try it out. You probably know MyHeritage for their Celebrity Lookalike Meters and family tree builders. I’ve always liked playing with their face recognition software and today was no exception. Their website is very intuitive and easy to navigate, in my opinion.

And now the results are in – which kid looks like which parent? Here’s what MyHeritage thought:

BB looks slightly more like mommy

but MM looks more like his father

What do you think – do you agree with the results?

Who do your kids look like?

Have you tried Smile.ly?

Category : Featured Reviews, Momma's Say, Website

I just heard about this new website called smile.ly which is a lot like Bzz Agent – another great website for anyone who loves trying new products and word of mouth advertising. Both website are free to join and can be as low maintenance or high maintenance as you like – you determine how much work you want to put into it – and the more you do, the more offers you’ll get of course.

I just signed up for my first “mission” on smile.ly and I’m looking forward to many more. Anyone who hasn’t tried either of these websites, I highly recommend them.

Poll: Winner Information

Momma Jen and I were having a debate (or just a friendly back and forth email) this morning in regards to how to post Winners Information. We recently have started making little changes to the blog and how we do things around here. We are doing so to make it easier and more user friendly for our readers and ourselves.

Since we could not make a decision we decided to have our readers provide some input. So please answer the poll below and tell us what you think and prefer.

MMM2 – UPrinting 500 Business Card Giveaway (2 winners) – CLOSED

Category : Featured Reviews, Giveaways, Reviews & Giveaways, Website

With BlogHer coming around the corner (and fast!) I have been on the lookout for some new business cards online. I want to have a card that is fresh, different, and contains all of my social networking information. It’s hard to find that with other companies, and trust me, I checked out all the competitors with no luck.

UPrinting has been in the online printing business for 25 years. They provide a large variety of quality and price conscious products ranging from business cards to vinyl banners to letterhead and more. I love the variety but out of everything it’s the business cards that hold the appeal to me. Thanks to their Design Online feature you can literally build your business cards right from scratch. This option worked out the best for me. UPrinting does have a variety of templates available that you can work off of, but the option to use my blog header on the card worked out better for me. It allows me to show more of who I am and who I am about.

Want a sneak peak of my business card? It makes me so giddy! To see the whole thing find me at BlogHer and I’ll be sure to share and gush over it with you.

Thanks to their kindness UPrinting is our second great giveaway for Mommas March Mania 2.

All Star Buddies: Online Sports-Themed World of Games For Kids 6+

Category : Family entertainment, Featured Reviews, Website

All Star Buddies is a great website for kids ages 6+ that provides a safe, educational and fun virtual world for the pint sized sports enthusiasts in your life. Created by two moms with a passion for sports, fitness and leading a healthy lifestyle, their mission in creating All Star Buddies was to create a website that was both educational and entertaining. Noticing that children are spending more and more time online, they wanted to give them a place to “weave important learning into the fun and adventures that their kids were having online.” Their sports theme provides lessons on problem solving, teamwork, good sportsmanship, fitness and nutrition, taking care of the environment and the importance of staying active and playing real sports offline.

All Star Buddies says:

“We built this website and virtual world to bring kids of all ages and skill levels together on an equal playing field to have fun, compete and socialize. In Varsity Heights, every kid can be an all star and everyone is part of a winning team.”

The game takes place in an online town called Varsity Heights. This town offers endless games and activities that teach the important lessons mentioned above while having fun. Kids can explore areas like the Varsity Heights Stadium, the Arcade, School Zone, Town Square, The Museum Zone and The Beach Zone which each have their own games and activities to explore. The options for fun and learning are endless. Parents are also welcome in this virtual world, on and off the bleachers, so you can manage your “team” every step of the way.

All Star Buddies looks like the perfect virtual world for your little sports fans. If you have kids ages 6+ I definitely recommend checking it out with them!
