Giveaway: Sid the Science Kid & Dive Olly Dive on DVD – 3 Chances To Win!

Category : Family entertainment, Featured Reviews

SidBugClub DVDDive Olly Dive Ship Shape Sub DVD

I am a huge advocate of PBS kids – in my opinion, there is just no substitute for quality educational shows that are entertaining and always appropriate for my preschooler. We’ve been watching PBS since he was barely walking and I am fairly certain that it was shows like Sesame Street, Word World and Super Why which played a big part in his learning the alphabet as well as colors, numbers and more. I love that there are no commercials or inappropriate shows to dodge – and he loves having all his favorite characters in one place.

The next best thing to watching PBS is having some of our favorite PBS shows on DVD – being able to pop in one of these discs is a lifesaver when I need to get something done around the house and it’s not a weekday morning or afternoon. I recently had the opportunity to review two new Sid the Science Kid DVDs, Change Happens and The Bug Club as well as a new DVD for PBS Sprout show Dive Olly Dive called Ship Shape Sub.

My son is a long standing fan of Sid the Science Kid and he loved being able to watch a mini marathon of some of his favorite episodes like The Dirt On Dirt and My Shrinking Shoes. I am also a big fan of Sid – I’ve always liked the many different things the show manages to teach and the music that Teacher Susie sings in each episode is always so catchy! The kids in the show are cute and interesting and I think the shows provide a good preview for my son about the idea of school and what it will be like.

Dive Olly Dive, on the other hand, was completely new to us as we don’t have PBS Sprout in our area. I was pretty instantly smitten with the show which stars two adorable submarines-in-training, Olly and Beth, whose stories provide fun facts about the ocean as well as great life-skills. This show was educational in a way that is different from the majority of PBS Kids shows – rather than incorporating the alphabet, counting, science, etc. into the shows, it focuses on behavior and life – you’ll find lessons like learning from your mistakes, not judging a book by it’s cover and listening to others – oh so important! Both DVDs are now being highly requested in our household.

One other big thing of mention is that both Sid DVDs come with a bonus disc containing over two hours of great PBS Kids and Sprout shows. The DVDs include full stories from Sid The Science Kid, Word World, Dive Olly Dive, Hurray for Huckle!, Tiny Planets, Will & Dewitt, Animal Atlas, Hermie and Freinds, Pocoyo and Hopia. Almost all of these shows were new to us and it was fun to see some of the different Sprout shows that we’ve been missing out on.

Here’s a synopsis of what’s on each of the DVDs:

“Sid the Science Kid: Change Happens” and “Sid the Science Kid: The Bug Club”

Featuring the delightfully inquisitive Sid the Science Kid and his precocious pals, both DVDs celebrate and explore the great outdoors, tackling such questions as why bees live in hives and ants live in anthills, and observing such phenomena as how the heat from the sun can change matter.  Episodes include:

“Change Happens” DVD

  • My Mushy Banana
  • My Shrinking Shoes
  • My Ice Pops
  • The Perfect Pancake

“The Bug Club” DVD

  • Hello Doggie
  • Home Tweet Home
  • The Dirt on Dirt
  • Don’t Forget the Leaves

“Dive Olly Dive!: Ship Shape Sub”

This 3D-animated DVD for preschoolers features five episodes from the Dive Olly Dive! series, which explores the many interesting facets of ocean life in an entertaining and educational way.  With exciting underwater adventures featured throughout, this lively DVD is a perfect way to cap off a fun-filled day at the beach! Episodes include:

  • Haunted Ship Prank
  • Less is More
  • Navigation Consternation
  • Follow that Lobster
  • Don’t Tell Beth

All three DVDs are distributed by NCircle Entertainment and carry a suggested retail price of $12.99 each.

Kota & Pals Hatchlings – Adorable Baby Dinosaurs!

Category : Featured Reviews, games & toys

Kota & Pals Hatchlings What kid doesn’t dream of having their very own baby dinosaur? Hasbro has the answer to that dream for the kiddos aged 3+ in your life – Kota & Pals Hatchling Dinosaurs respond to your touch with a variety of movements and sounds that are very lifelike and very cute. At first my son was a little surprised when his new toy Stegosaurus began moving and making sounds but after a few moments he was delighted and enthralled with his new pet.

Want to learn more about the different animals available? The Hatchlings available include newborn T-Rex, Pterodactyl, Stegosaurus, and Triceratops. Each retails for $14.99-$16.99 and are available at most major toy retailors nationwide and also at HasbroToyShop.com. They require three AAA batteries, which are included. You can view an online demo of these dinosaurs here. Find out how the toy dinosaurs work (where you should pet your dino to get him to move), where each dinosaur comes from, what kinds of foods they ate, how big they are and more. It also includes a demonstration of how to change the dinosaur’s batteries!

I love the learning experience that can come from this toy – each toy comes with a fun dino fact card, telling you all about your little dinosaur. The more you play with your dinosaur, the more rambunctious it seems to get – which is similar to most pets I think – they thrive on interaction! I think this is a great toy for any dino loving child!

Tiny Tillia: Making Bath Time Fun Again

Category : Featured Reviews, bath & body

I’ve got the cure for your kid’s bath time boredom. Tiny Tillia is an all natural and adorable brand of children’s bath and body items. Check out their website for adorable soaps, bath gels and toys. I received an adorable assortment of mini bath gels, each containing 2 ounces of paraben free bubble bath.

Bath gels from Tiny Tillia

Their products are just adorable and I think they’d make an excellent gift for a little one or expecting momma in your life. I love that their products are all-natural and my son loves how cute the little bubble bath containers are. Plus their small size makes them easy to store when you aren’t using them.

The creative genius behind Tiny Tillia is the London-born designer Tiffany Lerman. She created the successful Chester collection of fashion prints found on products ranging from handbags to scrapbooking, before launching Tiny Tillia in 2006. The Tiny Tilia characters are all based on member’s of Tiffany’s family – each animal in the collection as a trait and a story that directly relates to someone she knows and loves, with new characters joining the Tiny Tillia gang all the time.

Tiny Tillia is sold at Fred Segal, The Right Start, Lisa Kline Kids, Shop Intuition, The Wynn Las Vegas and The Montage Resort & Spa and has also been featured in fashion and trade publications like CHILD Magazine, Variety, Fit Pregnancy and Women’s Wear Daily. Tiffany has also collaborated with her sister Rory, a children’s book author, on a series of board books that are all about the Tiny Tillia gang. So for all you mommas looking for the next big thing, it looks like Tiny Tillia might be it!

Giveaway: 3-in-1 Sit and Store Tub-Side Seat

Category : Featured Reviews, Giveaways, One Week - One Room Giveaways, around the home

Bath time can be full of fun and giggles, but it can also be full of aches and pains, a clutter of bath toys and soap in the eye. I can’t do much for those soapy eye incidents, but the rest I’ve got covered now. I just got the 3-in-1 Sit and Store Tub-Side Seat from one of my favorite companies, One Step Ahead, and ladies – I am in bath time heaven. I first saw this genius product while flipping through the One Step Ahead catalog which I read religiously by the way and you totally should, too. Anyway, when I saw this little seat, it was like the light bulb went off. I need this, I thought. So when I got the opportunity to receive and review one I was literally giddy. Like all the One Step Ahead products I’ve tried so far, this one did everything I wanted it to, how I wanted it to. Even my skeptical husband was wowed by this one.

3in1 Sit and Store from One Step Ahead

I loved the comfort of using this as a seat during my son’s bath – with a 300 pound weight load, I felt comfortable and knew it would support my weight, even while pregnant. My husband sat on it also and was comfortable as well. I liked the rounded edges of the top of the seat, it felt normal to be sitting on it, like it was clearly designed for this purpose. No hard corners to poke your legs while you sit. After his bath, I was able to put my son’s bath toys, soaps, etc. inside the stool, like the image shows above, and everything fit perfectly. It has air vents which allow moisture to escape, so no need to wait for them to be dry before storing.

Once he was toweled off and donning his pajamas, my son used the seat as a step stool while brushing his teeth. The stool is very sturdy, with a slip-resistant top and a wide, skid-resistant base. It is also a nice height and my son was able to reach the sink even better on this seat then he did on his old one. The seat also has 2 height positions, allowing for more comfort for a taller or shorter parent during bath time and a better reach for your child when using it as a step stool, depending on his or her height.

Use it as a bath seatMakes a great step stool

I am in love with the 3-in-1 Sit and Store Tub-Side Seat and so excited because we are giving one away to one lucky reader! Here’s how you can enter to win:

Frecklebox: Great Personalized Gifts For Kids

Category : Featured Reviews, gifts & greeting cards

I’ve recently started attempting to teach my three year old to spell his name, essentially by writing it anywhere I could. But I kept thinking about how great it would be to pick up some personalized gifts for him with his name splashed across them. So getting an opportunity to receive and review a book from Frecklebox which makes awesome personalized gifts for children was right up my alley and came just in time. I received a terrific hardcover nature book called, My Name Is, which tells the story of a child (namely my child) learning to spell his name. As he plays throughout the day he wonders how to spell his name, asking the plants and bugs and clouds, etc. around him if they know how to spell his name. And of course they do.

frecklebox

My son was absolutely over the moon for this book. He thought the story was cool enough but more importantly it was about him and had his name written all over it. By about halfway through the story, he would run his fingers under his name spelled on every other page in big letters (the letters are made out of clouds as seen above, as well as flowers, lady bugs, sea shells, pebbles, pigeons, and lastly stars – the whole thing is really breath taking) and then proudly announce that it spelled his name. I can tell this will be a favorite bed time story for a long time to come.

Frecklebox sells a wide variety of gifts – you can get this personalized book and others, as well as coloring books, placemats, growth charts, journals, puzzles and stickers – all with that same well thought out, beautifully designed end result. If you are looking for some truly stand out personalized gifts, this is definitely the place to get them.

Doubly Sweet: New Nestlé Lil’ Drumsticks & America’s Lil’ Heroes Contest

Category : Featured Reviews, delicious desserts

Two things I love? Delicious, low calorie desserts and people who make a difference. Apparently Nestlé and I have a lot in common. They just released the new Nestlé Lil’ Drumsticks, which are basically just like their original drumsticks that I think we can all collectively agree that we know and love, but made them mini and thus lower calorie versions of the original sweet treat. At around 140-150 calories each, these Lil’ Drumsticks are a nice way to reward your kids (or yourselves) with a guilt free dessert on a hot summer day.

I tried a 10 pack variety box that contained both the Cookie Dough flavor and the Chocolate Fudge Brownie, but they also sell them in chocolate with chocolate swirls and vanilla with chocolate swirls. Our verdict was that the Chocolate Fudge Brownie was both delicious and by far superior to the Cookie Dough which was not bad, but not amazing. Still, those Chocolate Fudge Brownie drumsticks were really something else and I know we’ll be buying them again.

But enough about dessert, let’s talk about those amazing children in your life. Namely any lil’ heroes you might know and love. This summer Nestlé is looking for children who have done something to make their neighborhoods or communities a better place. Maybe they’ve helped a friend or classmate in need or shown bravery in a tough situation? I don’t think it’s any secret that kids are capable of extraordinary things.

“Children can accomplish amazing things,” said John Harrison, Official Ice Cream Taster for the Nestlé Drumstick brand. “The Nestlé Drumstick team is delighted to recognize their heroic efforts and reward young heroes for making a positive difference in their communities. Entries will be judged on the child’s accomplishments, as well as the originality and creativity used to achieve their goals.”

10 winning kids will recieve a $1,000 U.S. Savings Bond and enough Nestle Drumstick Lil’ Drumsticks for a celebratory party with 50 friends and family members. Now that’s a sweet deal.

This contest started April 1, 2009 but you have until August 15 to submit an entry.

Adults aged 18+ can submit an entry form along with a 150-500 word story about any amazing children age 6-13 who lives in the US, describing why that child deserves to be a Nestle Drumstick Lil’ Drums Lil’ Hero. For an entry form just go to www.drumstick.com. Winning children will be notified by phone and / or mail throughout the length of the promotion, between June 15, 2009 and September 1, 2009.

Weekend Diversions: The Getting Offline Edition

Category : Diversions & Memes, weekend diversions

I’m writing this week’s Weekend Diversions on a Tuesday, taking total advantage of the post scheduling feature. Why write so far in advance? Thursday and Friday I’m going to be traveling with my husband to an out of state in person interview with a company we’re calling Dream Company. With any luck by the time we get back Friday night we’ll be celebrating a new job and delusionally busy with the planning details. I doubt I’ll be glancing at the computer much this weekend, thus the scheduled post. To celebrate this occasion, I thought I’d devote this week’s Weekend Diversions to minimalizing our time here online, or getting away from it completely. I’m going to start with small steps for the first diversion and by the third diversion, hopefully you’ll be hopping off the computer, too, into a fun new adventure with your family.

So let’s start with Readability, a website that lets you choose the fonts, font sizes and margins that you prefer to read online, install a little bookmarklet into your toolbar, and then click the bookmark when you want to view a certain page in that format. Cut the clutter and get to the heart of what you are trying to read. I’m betting this could increase your productivity and at the very least it was kind of fun playing with the settings and seeing how it did it’s thing. Give it a whirl.

Alright, this next one is for my fellow Mac users. To all the PC or Linux users reading this, I’m sorry, you’ll just have to move on to the next diversion, which promises to be a lot of fun anyway. Alright, for my Mac pals still with me, check out Freedom – this little application will disable your network connection for up to eight hours at a time, allowing you to step away, into the real world and find some 3D diversions in the form of ‘the rest of your life.’ Don’t worry if you change your mind and want to log back into your network before the time is up – just reboot your computer and you’ll be back up and running. I think this is a neat way to encourage yourself to take a break if you find yourself spending too much time online – or if you are trying to limit your kid’s online usage. But before you go, make sure you check out this last diversion!!

Since you’ve used Readability to increase your productivity and get your work done, and you’re maybe thinking about installing Freedom to give yourself a little internet R&R, here’s a link that will help you find something new and fun to do. KaBOOM lets you find local places to go out and play in your area. Search by your town or the town you’d like to visit and it will give you a list of parks and play areas near you. Want more incentive to give KaBOOM a try? If you know of a play area not on KaBoom you can enter it into their databse yourself. For each valid entry, Julianne Hough will donate $1 to your cause — and enter you in a drawing to win prizes. This week, you could win an Amazon Kindle 2! To read more about KaBoom and their mission to find as many places for kids to play as possible, click here.

Review: Puddlegear PVC and Phthalate free Children’s Rain Gear

Category : Featured Reviews

My son loves to play in the rain – and by play, I mean methodically jump and splash in every puddle he can find – you know, just like every other kid on the planet. But it isn’t always easy for us parents to say, “Sure go ahead and play!” knowing they are going to get soaked to the bone and you’ll have to drag them inside, cringing at your rug and furniture along the way, then get them out of the sopping wet clothes and into something warm – and then dry the clothes. Simple childhood joys are not as simple or joyous for parents. Unless you can come prepared.

If you haven’t heard of Puddlegear, which sells PVC and Phthalate free rain gear for children of all ages, you should really check them out. Made in Europe by a company called Abeko, the goal of Puddlegear is to dress kids in rain gear that keeps all of their clothes underneath dry, but doesn’t restrict their movement – so they can concentrate on the work of play and you can concentrate on enjoying the moment of letting them be kids – no more worrying about how wet they are getting and the chores you’ll be met with at home as a result of this indulgence. Just play.

You can buy Puddlegear in a range of sizes and styles – one-piece rain suits or a bib, rain pants, jackets, mitts – they even sell bibs and booties for infants – AND they can special order adult rain gear if you find yourself envious of your kid’s fun and want to join in (or if you are getting soaked anyway just being near the fun)! They are soft, flexible, breathable, wind and water proof and certified by Öko-Tex (sounds like echo-tex) to be free of over 100 harmful chemicals.

We tried out our Puddlegear on a particularly rainy day, letting our three year old jump in every puddle he could find on a walk to the supermarket, and then continue to play in the rain and puddles when we got home. I was soaked to the brim – but as you can see in the photo collage at the top of this post, his clothes stayed completely dry. He had a blast, he looked adorable (I just love how the blue suit brings out the color of his eyes) and he stayed DRY. Perfect.

Want to buy some Puddlegear of your own? You can order a suit for your kids online at puddlegear.com or stop by one of the retail locations which carry Puddlegear.
