Giveaway: GoPicnic Makes On The Go Eating Easy!

Category : Featured Reviews, foodie favorites

I have this little dream of taking my family on a picture perfect picnic luncheon – you know with a red and white checkered blanket; a woven basket filled to the brim with a delicious, indulgent feast; me in some stunning and yet casual ensemble perfect for the just slightly breezy, warm summer day we’ve chosen for our family outing. Yeah, it hasn’t happened yet. We don’t own or have any plans of owning a red and white checkered blanket or a woven basket. Usually our on-the-go lunches consists of a small assortment of leftovers or peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. I never seem to dress in just the right outfit for the weather and of course our plans often get rained out. Such is life.

So when GoPicnic contacted us to review their line of non-perishable and ready-to-eat meals made of natural ingredients that require no preparation, refrigeration or fuss – I was eager to give them a try. Maybe having the food prep taken out of the equation would make my fantasy picnic a reality? They sent me an assortment of their meals which you can get for specialty diets like kosher, halal, gluten-free or vegetarian, never mind their already vast variety. Check out their website for descriptions of all the meals available.

I packed three boxes into a bag: the Aqua Munch for my three year old son, the Go Deli for my husband and the Go Primo for myself. Then we headed to our nearest park and attempted this picnicking thing one more time. Of course, it wasn’t a perfect trip – picnicking with a three year old and a two week old infant is probably never going to be a sure thing. Add to that the fact that the picnic table we chose was a bit lopsided (I really need to get a red and white checkered blanket!), the wind was a bit too rough and a couple of pesky bugs… But I packed my pessimism aside and dug into the feast provided by GoPicnic. Here’s a breakdown of our thoughts:

  • I really liked how the boxes opened into little laptop style lunch trays (the kids meal even had little puzzles and games for my  son to play), but I think the inclusion of a little disposable placemat and / or trash bag would have been even better – something to easily sort the opened and unopened packages and provide a bit more of a workspace for prepping the lunches would have been just the ticket.
  • My son and husband both had “sandwiches” made with crackers. My son’s was a Sungold Creamy Sunbutter and Bonne Maman Strawberry Preserves. Both were delicious – we are already a big fan of the Bonne Maman preserves but had never had Sunbutter before – we were very impressed except that the ingredients were a bit too runny for the crackers provided, making for awfully messy sandwiches that should not be trusted in the hands of a three year old.
  • The same crackers, however, worked just fine in my husband’s Copper Cowbell Asiago Gourmet Cheese Spread and Old Wisconsin Beef Salami sandwich. I thought this was delicious – my husband was not as happy, but I think his Big Man Appetite was just unimpressed with the size of the “sandwiches” – the ingredients, in my opinion, were very tasty.
  • My sandwich was more Bonne Maman Strawberry Preserves paired with Nutella Chocolate Hazelnut Spread on a Bauli Classic Plain Croissant. It was, in a word, heavenly. I mentally added Nutella to my grocery list as I ate my sandwich and we all agreed it was the best lunch in the group. I think those croissants should be included in EVERY box – it was delicious.
  • Other foods we really loved were: the Mariani Ultimate Apricots, Brent & Sam’s Soft & Chewy Chocolate Chunk Cookie, Barry’s Bakery Cinnamon French Twist, and the Sweet Perry Orchards All-Natural Unsweetened Applesauce.
  • Other complaints: When the wind picked up, we really wished the boxes included were a bit heavier. We also would have liked some plain napkins included in addition to the lemon scented wet wipes. The wipes were very much appreciated but when spills happened, it would have been nice to have both. And with three year olds – yeah, spills happen.
  • The best thing though – was that we didn’t have to cook and we didn’t have to wash any dishes when we got home. It might not have been perfect, but it did get us outside and enjoying a fun new thing together. If it had been up to me to prepare that meal, we probably wouldn’t have gone out at all. And I really love that GoPicnic meals are made up of quality products that you’ll know and recognize from the store.

So, while these definitely didn’t give me that picture perfect picnicking experience (which I’m starting to think doesn’t exist), I enjoyed trying these GoPicnic meals and discovering some fun new foods. I think they would make a really fun school lunch or camping meal – something a bit classier and healthier than your average Lunchables. I also would have liked to have these boxes when I was out and about while pregnant – we’d often find ourselves far from home when my appetite flared – it would have been so convenient to have one or two of these packed away in my car.

What’s For Lunch?

Category : Featured Reviews, Momma's Say, foodie favorites

I just finished eating lunch – peanut butter and jelly on flat bread – FlatOut flat bread to be specific – it’s one of my new favorite things – I found it in the deli section of our local supermarket and am blown away by it on two counts. First it is super soft, even a week after purchase it never cracks like tortilla breads typically will without steaming. Fresh out of my refrigerator, I am good to go. Second – it’s healthy!! I get the light version – the Italian herb is super yummy – which has only 90 calories in a wrap – no trans fats, no sugar, 9 grams of fiber and protein. It’s supported by that Best Life Diet that I’m always hearing about – personally I don’t do the ” Brand Name diet” thing – counting calories paired with some common sense is the best “diet” I’ve found.

Anyway, I was eating my so sophisticated peanut butter and jelly flatbread wrap, trying to decide, “Is this healthier than if I’d just eaten it on bread?” And I’m not sure – but it definitely felt more special. I also like to make a nice healthy hummus and spinach wrap with these flatbread things. They have been my go to’s for lunch lately but I’m a bit worried that before long I’ll be sick of them, too. You see I am constantly trying to find some great, healthy, filling, delicious lunch that isn’t a pain in the butt to make. And I’m fickle – it won’t be too much longer before I get bored of this.

What is your favorite thing to make for lunch? Any great new things you’ve found in your grocery store lately that I should know about? What did YOU have for lunch today?

New Oikos Greek Yogurt & The Stonyfield Farm & Energy Star/Kenmore Sweepstakes

Category : Featured Reviews, One Week - One Room, foodie favorites

Greek yogurt has become a constant staple in my kitchen since we tried it many moons ago. Initially it was just a substitute for sour cream which meant it only showed up on Mexican nights. Then we used a 16 oz. tub of it to make a French onion dip which was absolutely divine and so low calorie in comparison to your typical dip that it was a little unbelievable. After awhile my husband began using it for all sorts of dip combinations and mixed with fruit preserves or honey to make his own yogurt concoctions and it wasn’t long afterwards until I joined the bandwagon, too. Now I prefer the taste of Greek yogurt to normal yogurt and can eat it plain without batting an eyelash even though you couldn’t pay me to eat plain normal yogurt. True story.

Stonyfield Farms now makes an organic Greek yogurt called Oikos. Although there are various brands of Greek yogurt on the market today, our Oikos Organic is the only organic Greek yogurt on the market. That means it’s made without artificial colors, flavors or sweeteners, and it’s made from organic milk produced without the use of toxic persistent pesticides, chemical fertilizers, antibiotics, or artificial growth hormones (ie rBST). It doesn’t seem to be in all the major grocery stores yet but I have seen it in our local Hannaford and word on the street is Shaws and some Stop and Shop chains carry it also. If none of those grocery stores are in your area you can check out the Oikos website which has a Store Finder that can get you to your nearest Oikos seller quickly.

How did Oikos compare to brands like Fage and Chobani? I sampled both a plain Oikos serving (with my own fruit preserves mixed in) as well as their blueberry flavor and couldn’t really tell the difference but my husband, who often eats the yogurt plain now says that the Oikos had a more acidic flavor that more closely resembled a plain yogurt than Fage or Chobani’s which he finds creamier in both texture and flavor.

If you are just jumping on the Greek band wagon and you are already a fan of plain yogurt, Oikos might really appeal to you. If you dislike plain yogurt but want to give Greek a shot, I highly recommend getting a flavored variety or mixing any of the brands with a fruit preserve or honey. Greek yogurt also makes an excellent cooking ingredient (click here for some great recipe ideas) as it’s less likely to curdle when heated. The straining process that gives Greek yogurt its creamy taste also makes it richer in protein than regular yogurt, and lower in lactose. Oikos Organic Greek Yogurt has 0% fat, just 90 calories per 5.3 oz. plain serving*, twice the protein of regular yogurt, and fewer carbohydrates.

Did you know that Stonyfield has teamed up with Energy Star to give one lucky winner $10,000 worth of ENERGY STAR-qualified Kenmore appliances from Sears?

“We want people to test their home energy use knowledge by taking our Home Energy Quiz,” says Stonyfield Farm President and CE-Yo Gary Hirshberg. “Even those who consider themselves experts in home energy efficiency might learn a thing or two, saving energy and the planet while saving money.”

The average American household spends more than $2,000 a year on energy bills, but the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) ENERGY STAR program can help reduce energy costs by over a third (about $700).

The ENERGY STAR-Qualified Appliance Sweepstakes is being promoted via Stonyfield Farm yogurt lids. Anyone can complete Stonyfield’s Home Energy Quiz to be entered into the sweepstakes for a chance to win $10,000 in Sears gift cards to be used to purchase ENERGY STAR-qualified Kenmore appliances – the nation’s leading appliance brand.

Check out the Home Energy Quiz and complete it online or by mail by June 15th for a chance to win. Complete rules and entry forms can be found at www.stonyfield.com or www.kenmore.com.
